ofAppraisalTheoryMartinandWhitedetailedAppraisalTheoryintheirwork,andtheypointedout,appraisalisaninterpersonalsystematthelevelofdiscoursesemantics(2003:33).ThetheoryisadevelopmenttoSystemicFunctionalLinguistics(SFL).ThekeydifferencebetweenSFLandAppraisalTheoryliesinthattheformertendtobeexplanatoryandthelatterisinterpretive.Sothetheoryfocusesonappraisal,whichbelongstodiscoursesemanticresources,togetherwiththeothertwo,negotiationandinvolvement.Allthethreepartsserveasconstruinginterpersonalmeaningofthediscourse.AppraisaltheoryhasbeenusedinrecentyearsintheanalysisoforiginalwritingsinEnglish,particularlyingenresofacademicandnewspaperdiscourse,buthasrarelybeenusedfortheanalysisoftranslation.Appraisaltheory,accordingtoMartin,isregionalizedasthreesub-systems—‘attitude’,‘engagement’and‘graduation’.
