This paper shows that this evolution is due, at least partly, to the low performance of newly exported products in terms of export entry into destinations, so that these goods are exported sustainably only towards most accessible markets in terms of distance, culture and trade preferences. I first show that for almost all countries in the sample, newly exported goods are sold on markets relatively more accessible in terms of trade costs (i.e. close, contiguous markets with regional trade agreements) than the destination markets of traditionally exported goods.
