Jefferson,"theobjectistomakethemostoftheirland,laborbeingabundant:hereitistomakethemostofourlabor,landbeingabundant.ItwasintheUnitedStates,therefore,eenth-centuryagriculturalmachineryfirstcame.Attheopeningofthecentury,withtheexceptionofacrudeplow,farmerscouldhavecarriedpracticallyalloftheexistingagriculturalimplementsontheirbacks;by1860,mostofthemachineryinusetodayhadbeendesignedinanearlyform.Themostimportantoftheearlyinventionswastheironplow.Asearlyas1790CharlesNewboldofNewJerseyhadbeenworkingontheideaofacast-ironplowandspenthisentirefortuneinintroducinghisinvention.Thefarmers,however,werenotinterestedinit,claimingthattheironpoisonedthesoilandmadetheweedsgrow.Nevertheless,manypeopledevotedtheirattentiontotheplow,untilin1869JamesOliverofSouthBend,Indiana,turnedoutthefirstchilled-steelplow.
