n Addition to Mercury —The gravimetric particulate loading is determined from the mass of the ash on the ?lter (Container 1) and the residual particulate from the acetone rinse (Container 2a), as outlined in EPA Method 5 or 17. If a large amount of ash is on the ?lter, carefully remove the ash to create a raw ash sample from which a representative-weighed aliquot can be taken for digestion. If the mass of ash collected on the ?lter is small (less than 0.5 g), digest the entire ?lter along with the ash. Dissolve the residual particulate from Container 2a using concentrated HNO 3. This solution is then added to Container 2 (0.1 N HNO 3probe rinse). The ash material from Container 1 is then digested using the procedures described in 13.3.2 of this method.
